Join me in Assynt in March or October visiting the stunning locations this beautiful area of North West Scotland has to offer.

For the past six years I have been running this popular tour and it is always a pleasure to visit Assynt. One of its main attractions is the variety of locations, from mountain scenery to coastal, there will always be something for the landscape photographer to shoot whether it be wide vistas or intimate landscape images.

What is also a joy about the area is that so many great photo opportunities are very easy to access so there is no need for long hikes, though there may be a chance that we will climb up Stac Pollaidh to take in the amazing views from this mountain, believe me, it is well worth it (please note this is only an option on the tour, not a definite).

As you drive around Assynt you notice how the mountains all have different characters from different angles and we’ll be shooting these distinctive mountains using lochs, lochans, rivers, trees and the fantastic geology as the foreground interest. One hill that never fails to impress is the iconic Suilven with its distinctive outline, it’s not a particularly large hill but it always seems to demand photographic attention and I’m sure it will be appearing in many of the images during the tour. Just don’t tell Suilven that my favourite hill in the area is Quinag, another amazing mountain that will be photographed during our stay.

March is an ideal time to visit the area, the weather should still be suitably moody and even wintry so we can shoot the wonderful landscapes under suitably dramatic conditions.
October is a great time to visit the area, the autumn colours will be well on their way and this only goes to enhance the beauty of this area even further. There will be some fantastic big vistas to shoot where you can use the beautiful trees and grasses as an accompaniment to the mountains beyond.

I have barely mentioned the coast !!! Assynt is not all about mountain scenery, there are coastal locations in this area that are amongst the most beautiful in Scotland and in some of those locations you can still photograph the mountains as a stunning backdrop to your coastal scenes. On this tour we will hope to visit places such as Clachtoll, Achmelvich and Achnahaird Bay plus a couple of other locations that are a little less photographed and just as beautiful.

Please note that I will be on hand at all times to help and offer guidance with your photography when we are on location.

The tour is based in the village of Lochinver in a lovely lochside house, in all honesty you could easily take some stunning images from the house itself. In the evenings after a busy day shooting on location we will head to a local restaurant for food. Hopefully we will also get time to do some image reviews whilst relaxing in the lovely lounge area of the house.
The house is hired for one week from Saturday to Saturday. Please note, you are more than welcome to stay at the house for the whole week, there is no extra charge for this. In my opinion I think it is nice if you get to the area and then you can relax or go out and explore yourself for a while before we officially start on Sunday.

As mentioned the tour starts on Sunday evening when we go to the local restaurant and have a talk about the few days ahead. Monday is the first day of our four full days on location (Mon-Thurs), you can then stay at the house on Friday too and explore the area further yourself or there may be a location that you want to re-visit.

The cost of the workshop includes all tuition and transport during the workshop. Excluded from the price are evening meals and drinks and snacks during the day. We will have breakfast at the house before we head out for the day's photography.

Please note, there will be some hill walking involved on this workshop so a certain level of fitness will be required to participate. If conditions are with us we may well be walking to the summit of Stac Pollaidh or at least the lower slopes for the fine views available from here.

The workshop is catered for those at all levels, subjects to be covered on the workshop are:

Exposure.
Histogram.
Focal length choice.
Composition.
Filters.
Focus.
Getting the most out of Live View.
The wider vista and the more abstract scene.

PLEASE NOTE - I will also be offering staggered payments on workshops. Believe me, I know how difficult things are at present and we can always come to some kind of arrangement about payment if that would interest you, please contact me via the contact form if this is the case.

Please contact me via the contact page in the menu bar if you have any more questions regarding this workshop and I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you would like to go ahead and book the workshop or pay a deposit please click the purchase link below.
